ESNN-10 stories take place far in the future, where aliens were discovered and human world is on the verge of finally making contact. Or, rather, they have the contact, but now they face new challenges, beginning with an image they can show to the new world.
Feher, the home of knudhy, is the fifth planet from their Star Knut, the densest plant in the solar system, the only terrestrial planet in the system, and the only inhabited planet in Knut’s star system.
According to radiometric dating and other sources of evidence, Feher formed only 2.9 billion years earlier than Earth. It has two natural satellites, moons Wiater and Iyumi, which follow the planet, being always in opposite to each other. It is normal to see one or the other, but never the two moons together. Feher’s sidereal year is 412.26 solar days.
The modern name Feher developed from a wide variety of knudhy languages, which derived from the Old Knudhy noun Faher. It had variations between the tribes, but due the buildup, where most nations shared the same land mass, the consensus soon rose to name the land, and thus the planet it was on, Feher.
Compared to Earth, the planet’s oblate spheroid shape is closer to sphere than Earth’s. Because Feher rotates slower, it does not experience such bulge as Earth would. The average diameter on the equator is approx 10,223 kilometers. Local topography deviates from the idealized spheroid, deviating up 0,28% below the water line while it only deviates approx 0,15% above the local sea level.
Although the planet is similar to Earth in its spheric shape, it is remarkably different as almost half of the planet is an ocean and instead of several it only has one land mass. Also, this water is drinkable for locals, and tolerable without notable health risks to humans if it is boiled.
Feher’s atmosphere has no definite boundary, slowly becoming thinner and fading into outer space. Two third of the atmosphere’s mass is contained within the first 19 km of the surface. The climate is driven by the movement of that air mass duo Knut’s heating properties.
Climate on Feher has latitudinal anomalies, which is also driven by the landmass – the inner land gets far less rain than the areas nearer to the green seaside. Thus the areas around the mountain regions are pretty much deserts.
The highest temperature ever measured on Feher was 32°C, but compared to Earth, they have far lower temperatures for both summer and winter.
The biosphere is divided into a number of biomes, inhabited by broadly similar plants and animals. On land, biomes are separated primarily by differences in latitude, height above sea level and humidity. Terrestrial biomes lying within the Polar regions, at high altitudes or in extremely arid areas are relatively barren of plant and animal life; species diversity reaches a peak in humid lowlands at equatorial latitudes.
According to biomes, there are four which are recognized – tropic, cold regions, polar region and seaside. The sea biomes are divided into two categories – polar and equatorial.
2.3 Natural hazards
Large areas of Feher’s surface are subject to extreme weather such as tropical cyclones, hurricanes, or typhoons that dominate life in those areas. The strongest storms are often around the seaside’s souther region and the island regions suffer greatly. However, they have coped with them by not building their temporary housing to last while keeping their most valued possessions storages under surface capsules. They do not live in them more than a day or two during the storms, but live on land in the temporary houses.
2.4 Knudhy geography
There are 4,5 billion knudhy, who live on the planet. The entire planet is not habitable, despite its lush green regions. The inland, or the furthest away from the sea, the land becomes barren and hard to live on, so most knudhy live closer to sea. There are exceptions, but further away, the population gets scattered into smaller settler communities.
About 69,226 million km2 of Feher’s land surface consists of forest and woodlands while about the same amount is grassland and pastures. Only 20,01 million km2 was cultivated.
There used to be time, about 3025 years ago, when Feher was divided into separate lands under ruling of one tribe. About 1000 years ago they changed it as they began their explorations to other lands and thus now they have succumbed back to tribal life, where the head of the tribe, the Lord, has to take part of the Councils ruling the entire Feher while excessing most of his power only over their own tribe, blood relations. Although to outsiders, they may seem steady in politically, there are lot of tribal wars going on to this day.
Feher’s Government is called Council. It consists of 249 members, Lords, who lead their own tribes, who habitat Feher.
They have the High Lord, who enacts as the king of the land, though differently from human kings, he has the last word on everything. High Lord is chosen after the passing of the previous one in 2 weeks. The position is not hereditary.
The laws of Feher are based on blood relations and tribal understandings. Each tribe holds their own values and thus has their own set of laws that every member of the tribe must follow. Tribe’s survival is the most important and they value their families greatly. Thus, you never lie to your blood relations. Given, that does not include outsiders, but as far as the laws go – tribal relations are considered sacred.
They have brought their understandings also on ESNN-10. As they have other space stations / mother ships, each tribe tends to have their own ship they rule over. ESNN-10 is in the hands of one tribe, and thus the tribe’s law is basically adapted to the ship.
3.3 Foreign relations
Most knudhy tribes are merchant warriors. That is, the tribes are always divided into two – merchants and warriors. Although both get the same education, after the child becomes initiated to society, it naturally shows, which part of the social structure they fall to. Due the education, they are capable of conducting both side’s obligations should they have need for it. They may not like it, but they do it.
Knudhy have established great number of contacts with other planets and species close to their genetic code. They have met others as well, but they have not been able to make contact nor do they always seek it. They made contact to humans only because humans are genetically closest species they have encountered throughout their space search.
Feher has largely military culture. They have municipal military sections and global military sections. The municipal military’s duty is to protect their tribal lands against attacks or perform campaign assigned to them by their elders. The global military acts as their umbrella corporation, providing them with units to protect Feher against dangers arriving from space.
Because they are warrior race, and physical training for battle is the basis of their education, they have strong sense of obedience in their ranking. Both females and males get the basic education, but it is frowned upon for women to join the ranks unless they are deemed unfit for parental duties. It is due their rising number of infertility and inability to bare children rather than tradition. It is normal that most males, who have joined the army have not found or joined the mating rituals nor “married”. The higher ranks do marry after they reach their peak in fertility.
3.5 Administrative divisions
Feher is divided into city states in almost entire planet. There are only two larger states which include an union of cities, but neither of them are interested in taking over the other or including their surrounding territories unless the states have something to gain from the cities.
The two unions were created to advance sciences and to act as analyzing units for the information and knowledge gained from the encounters with other species. And to solve their own personal problems.
It is common that tribes control the cities alone or together with one or more other tribes, who share their common values.
3.6 Other territories and collectivities
Knudhy has several planetoids they use as space stations that have small colonies. As tribes have their own space stations/ mother ships, they consider them as their territories as well which are autonomic and hold the territorial rights similar to their mother land.
They do not colonize planets with already existing populations, rather exchanging for supplies. As they are not united nation in space, they try to maintain their ships rather than take up dubious enterprises which might cause them more harm than necessary.
Feher’s economy has two sides. As the mother ships are related to the tribes, who built them, they are often their biggest income and export articles. It depends on what the ships do (looting, science, exploring, protection), but in most cases they are two way income for the tribes. The other side is the mutual trade.
Because they are technologically advanced in several areas, their main economical targets is on energy.
Big population needs a lot of farms to feed their needs. Close to half the land is under agriculture while half of the food comes from fishing on the oceans and seas.
It exists, but in truth, it does not show. Traveling is expensive up taking and thus reserved only for necessities.
Knudhy have developed an energy source, which is suitable for use on the space stations and mother ships. Although this part of the technology is advanced, they are yet to establish stable electrical system that reaches outside the cities. A lot of them use the energy sources easiest to access – wind, solar or water or chemical reactions.
Feher supports large network of roads that are necessities for proper trades. They have separate stations which were created to keep contact with mother ships hovering above the planet. They are kept knowingly apart from any city because of the dangers the ships might have on the surroundings.
Most of their public transport and personal transport hovers above ground which has lessened their impact on the soil and for the need to maintain roads as we know it. Most of them are simply guiding lines that run as beacons in the high grass. To give the cars a way through, most of the maintaining includes cutting down trees and keeping the beacons visible. Still, as with most things – the transports outside the cities can’t leave their tracks. There are simpler transportations, which allow moving into villages and such, but generally they are not used that often. They are more like transportation machines for goods than people.
Knudhy are technologically advanced nation, but they love simpler life if they can have it. Most of their technology is built for space travel while they like to maintain a simpler way of life on Feher itself. It has to do with practicality and the fact that they didn’t have resources for everything, so the main focus on Feher is communication and transport between the places while in space it also includes life support systems and weaponry.
